Publish your life-science paper as a record anyone can verify

LabsTrail is an open registry that rates the quality of life-science papers, recording each paper and each of its ratings off-chain on the OriginTrail DKG and on-chain on Base.

Why it exists

Many published results can't be repeated, yet trust in a paper still comes mostly from the journal it appeared in, and the reviews behind that trust are rarely public. AI agents now read and build on papers at a scale no person can, with no better way to tell which ones give enough to be repeated.

LabsTrail records each paper, with who submitted it and which exact file, then rates its quality in the open: a machine reproducibility score first, transparent human review next. The paper and each rating are recorded off-chain and on-chain.

Why LabsTrail, in more detail
More than 70% of more than 1,500 researchers had tried and failed to reproduce another scientist's experiments (Baker, Nature, 2016).

Two layers, one record

LabsTrail publishes each paper on the OriginTrail Decentralized Knowledge Graph (DKG) as a Knowledge Asset: a set of linked statements about the paper, with an owner and a proof on-chain. Its content and its proof live in two places that check each other.

The content, off-chain

DKG nodes store the asset's statements: title, authors, the PDF's link, the submitter, their signature and its deadline. Once published, OriginTrail replicates them across the context graph's nodes, and any node subscribed to LabsTrail's graph can fetch them by the UAL, the asset's permanent address.

The owner and the proof, on-chain

Publishing mints the asset on Base as an ERC-721 token and anchors the merkle root of its statements, one hash computed from all of them. Any node can check that the content still matches that root. Only the token's holder can update the asset, and each update anchors a new root under the same UAL.

Held by LabsTrail's node, which publishes the asset and pays its fees.
Your claim
Your signature inside the asset, covered by the merkle root.
The PDF
Stored off-chain on IPFS, at an address computed from its bytes, so it can't be swapped.

How it works

Publish

live

Three steps and one signature. No gas.

  1. Connect your wallet

Your address becomes the submitter on the record.

  2. Drop your PDF

It's stored on IPFS. We read its title, authors and abstract, and check it's a life-science or health paper.

  3. Sign once

Signing is free and sends no transaction. We mint the record and pay its fees.

Rate

phase 1 live

Anyone with a wallet can ask for a rating of a published paper, from its page. Each phase adds its own score on-chain, and earlier scores stay as they were.

Pick a paper to rate
  1. Reproducibility readiness

An AI model checks the whole paper against the checklists for the kinds of study it reports: does it give what others need to reproduce the work? The score, from 0 to 100, goes on-chain. It doesn't say whether the results hold.

  2. Human review

Reviewers drawn at random with Chainlink VRF, so anyone can check the draw was fair, read the paper and score it. Their score is recorded next to the first one.

  3. Wet-lab replication

A lab repeats the experiments, then reviewers check its results. That verdict is recorded as a third score, next to the first two.

What a paper asset holds

The statements DKG nodes store for each paper: its details, a permanent link to the PDF, and your signature. The merkle root on Base covers all of them, so anyone can check who submitted it without trusting us.

A rating is a separate asset, with its own UAL, whose statements point to this one. The paper asset itself never changes.
